I need a name for a new GNOME Theme 6 March, 2008
Hi guys, I need a name for a new Gtk Theme + Metacity that I made one month ago and I’d like to publish asap in Gnome Themes Extras (I’m also the Maintainer of this module).
Please, if you have an Idea, add a comment here.
Description
Basically it is composed of a Clearlooks-based Gtk theme with a darker background (compared to the default Clearlooks), more roundess, brighter shadings on most widgets (toolbars included), a Metacity theme merged with the Menubar (I’m a fan of the default blue borders, but since FOSS is about choice this is for the guys who like it
), and the Gnome Folders by Ulisse Perusin.

Cimi, stop teasing
.

Nice. May I suggest a little more difference between selected and unselected windows in the Metacity theme?

Flow?
Clearlooks Flow?
Clear Flow?

clear steel

Sliver (not a typo)
Clean&Clear
I would love to see a version that had the dark background replaced with white, just curious but i have a feeling it would look good (or at least i would like it)

@martin:
i guess that buttons without symbols and light font color is enough… isn’t it?
I can’t change the color or i will break the smooth gradient…
6 March, 2008 alle 23:35
My vote goes to Sliver. Will this be a part of Gnome 2.22?
6 March, 2008 alle 23:36
I suggest “Suave” - means “smooth” in a variety of languages, and that’s the impression I get from this theme - It is smooth and gentle, but also very clean.

@cimi
i see what martin is saying - but it may feel different with actual use.
What about - dont know if this is possible but what about not showing the buttons at all on inactive
or go even lighter with the text.
6 March, 2008 alle 23:47
I don’t know, but I’d like to see it, studio, mint, nodoka, and human all included by default in ubuntu. (I approve) Can it do vertical tabs and all that? Is it completely… complete?
6 March, 2008 alle 23:49
graet names!
I like “Suave”, but “Sliver” rocks!
ps. yep, as Martin said, a little more difference between selected and unselected windows would be nice…
6 March, 2008 alle 23:50
You could do a name like “Moonshine”? It definitely reminds me of something moon-ish.
Suggestion, the unfocused window borders have blank buttons for the window states. I’d prefer adding back the button icon faintly. If not that, make the un-iconed buttons much fainter themselves also.
7 March, 2008 alle 0:14
You can also make mockups with The Gimp…
7 March, 2008 alle 0:20
Stainless doesn’t seems used yet.
7 March, 2008 alle 0:33
i like it! Argentum (latin for silver) would be a nice name to it, iirc sliver is already taken by some other theme.
maybe making the bg of the focused window’s buttons black for close and dark grey for the others would help a more marked distinction between focus states without too much impact or uglyness, that said good work, keep it up
7 March, 2008 alle 0:35
Dusk? Dawn? Nightvision?
Greyt (grey + great)?
7 March, 2008 alle 0:42
Should be independent from the colors… Since you may want to change them
and it will become no more Silvered
7 March, 2008 alle 0:45
It’s 2008, and it’s a subdued yet organic (rounded) theme. Would fit very well in a business environment.
Why not call it Beijing?
7 March, 2008 alle 0:56
Unified, Unity, Unique, Unito.
7 March, 2008 alle 1:16
Seems a lot to Mac OS X. That was my first impression. It is avaliable for download?
7 March, 2008 alle 1:17
Unity +1
7 March, 2008 alle 2:00
“Grigio Milano”.
7 March, 2008 alle 2:28
@molok: LOL
7 March, 2008 alle 2:55
Robocop.
7 March, 2008 alle 3:01
You should call it Cimitar (typo intended).
7 March, 2008 alle 7:26
Icicle.
Frozen.
Frozen Pond.
Ice Pond.
Winter.
Smoke.
7 March, 2008 alle 8:04
How about: “Crisp!”
7 March, 2008 alle 8:41
C-metal
7 March, 2008 alle 8:57
Unilooks, it goes well also in Firefox!
7 March, 2008 alle 9:30

Tranquillity ?
7 March, 2008 alle 10:18
That there looks bloody sweet. I guess you Italian guys have an knack for design.
A clean name for a clean theme: Clean, Clear
The dusty metallic feel could vouch for naming it after a metal. Lithium, Zinc, Aluminum,…
7 March, 2008 alle 10:19
(you are italian right? ;-P)
7 March, 2008 alle 11:36
Floogy
Anyways, please make it available for download!

Suave rocks

7 March, 2008 alle 12:42
I like Suave, Unilooks, Unity, since they are not related to the colors (which may change) but they’re related to the look. Also, they mean something.
@Kamstrup: yes
7 March, 2008 alle 12:58
Simplelooks
Simplyclear
7 March, 2008 alle 13:15
Really stupid: Roundlooks… or Clearrounds… or Smoothlooks… or Smoothrounds… but to be honest something without those stupid jokes with “clear” or “looks” is better
PS a metacity theme called Unity yet exists on gnome-look.org
7 March, 2008 alle 13:22
Union?
Btw Unity is not ®…
7 March, 2008 alle 13:36
Which font configuration are you using? They look really crisp!
7 March, 2008 alle 14:20
Suave +1

Elegante
7 March, 2008 alle 14:26
After DarkLooks & Clearlooks… SilverLooks? MetaLooks? GrayLooks?
7 March, 2008 alle 15:56
an advice not for the name but for the theme itsself
i think the Xs which close the tab are too big
so the would be better if they were like in clearlooks or gummy
simo
7 March, 2008 alle 16:41
Uno?
7 March, 2008 alle 17:27
I’d go for suave too.
It should be possible to make the menu bar flat, right?
you wrote sth about that recently and I think it would look even better that way.
7 March, 2008 alle 17:29
oops… I meant tool bar of course.
7 March, 2008 alle 17:31
Wow, finally my folders made their way in
I like Unity and Suave, if you want a joke on Clearlooks it could be Smoothlooks.
Btw I agree with tmartin about the unfocused window status buttons, every time I tried to use a teme with blank buttons, in a short I reverted back to another theme.
Bravo, bel tema! Continua così!
7 March, 2008 alle 17:45
@ulisse, martin:
Unfocused buttons have symbols on prelight (mouse hover)
7 March, 2008 alle 17:51
Chameleon :>
7 March, 2008 alle 17:53
Looks like something between Clearlooks and Aurora.
Aulooks? Cleuora? :))
7 March, 2008 alle 17:54
I suggest something related to metal elements since it reminds me a sort of “soft metal”
What about “Aluminium” or the italian translation, “Alluminio”?
I think that it fits nice
Anyway great work as always!
7 March, 2008 alle 18:55
@xander:
XD
What about Jointime? It can represent at the same time the change and strongness of clearlooks.
Suave doesn’t impress me. From english to italian translation it means “unto”
7 March, 2008 alle 23:36
«From english to italian translation it means “unto” » kill whoever wrote your dictionary
BTW, “UNO” of a famous theme for OS X http://gui.interacto.net/ (and Unified has something to do with OS X too), so look out
anyway the theme is slick, soft and easy at the eyes
I do see it might be difficult to identify inactive windows, but the theme I’m using now has actually the same problem, so…
“Suave” sounds nice, but I don’t really see it “soave” (I like Italian for things like names for themes or app components).
Hmm, how about “velvet”? not sure, though…
bye

Dai, la paravia non ci ha mai traditi XD
Comunque sia, credo sia meno ovvio il nostro accostamento di significato con lo spagnolo che non quello degli inglesi con la propria lingua.

Velvet m’ispira, invece sisi

may I suggest any of the proposed terms to be translated in Italian? once I read about how Italian terms are used in foreign countries as product names (just think about…Vista!!) because of their sound or something else.
we are just too used about Italian terms, but I really like the sound…
don’t you like Ghiaccio much more than Ice or Limpido (or Purezza, or something else) instead of Clear?
I do!
great job by the way!! although I do agree with the fact that focused window is not enough recognizable at first sight…what about a stronger font difference (e.g.: don’t hardcode a precise color for non focused window title font, but try to get the opposite color of the one chosen for the non focused titlebar)?
my 2 cents….
8 March, 2008 alle 16:59
@raldo O_O http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/suave
@bastianazzo, think about how they would pronounce the word, then ‘Ghiaccio’ -> No such thing like “GH” in English (la G è sempre dura). E il dittongo IA è difficile da pronunciare IMO
Limpido -> Lym-py-doh ? urgh…
Purezza -> poo-ree-zah (it doesn’t ‘look’ nice either with that double ‘z’)
9 March, 2008 alle 1:43
@NoWhereMan
well said…we should think to some other Italian term, easy pronouncable by foreigners
thanks for the feedback
9 March, 2008 alle 21:52
@bastianazzo
pizza?
btw suave as nice
10 March, 2008 alle 11:37
It’s based on gummy, isn’t it? So what about “Gommolo”?
Note for non Italian people: in Italian translation of Disney’s Snow White the dwarfs are called Pisolo, Mammolo, Brontolo and so on, using a template like “wordolo“. So we have a really stupid joke: create new dwarfs addind olo to existing words… Well, at least I do it sometime…
PS my best fictional dwarf is “Rantolo”
10 March, 2008 alle 12:29
Non sarebbe possibile togliere il contorno dei tasti nelle finestre inattive (parlo del tema Metacity) ?
O magari trovare una soluzione un po’ piu’ particolare
10 March, 2008 alle 12:39
The system toolbar (minimize, close etc.) should have “icons” also on the buttons of “not on-top” windows… yes, you can click on the system toolbar also if the window isn’t on-top. That would be more usable.
10 March, 2008 alle 12:50
P.S.
I mean always visible icons, just like the windows on-top (maybe of another color, but visible).
10 March, 2008 alle 13:37
I just did a fresh install of hardy alpha 6 and I erased my older personalized themes. So this looks like a great theme and I can’t wait to trash the normal clearlooks theme for it.
