GNOME 2.24 Wallpaper Contest 2 April, 2008
Hi Artists/Designers!!!
Today starts the Wallpaper Contest for GNOME 2.24, which should give a fresh breath of new wallpapers.
Our idea is to find out good wallpapers to match current GNOME style (Clearlooks and Tangoish style), and with them find out talented artists that may join (if they likes) our artwork team.
There’s not yet an ending date, maybe it will be around the GUADEC, so there can be a discussion in the Meeting.
Please follow the submission guidelines, in both general and quality sections. They summarize the aspects we will take in mind when choosing the winners.
Thanks to KDE people for the permission to take some guidelines from their 4.0 contest

Excellent. Be sure to get a variety. I think we should try to have a dark or black variant for those that prefer, among others, with white text and such.
With the theme used on this blog, I’m sure you understand.

Which would be the right place to look for the OFFICIAL Gnome artwork? I’m trying to find the official wallpaper for the 2.22 release, or 2.20 for that matter. It seems that Ubuntu (my distro of choice) doesn’t include the official artwork by default; I really don’t want to get a full Gnome LiveCD (or any other distro (do Foresight ships the official artwork?)) just to get a wallpaper.
http://art.gnome.org/ seems to be the right place… but unfortunately there’s no (easy) way to distinguish official artwork from the rest. And I don’t want to skim over pages and pages of wallpapers trying to “guess” if any of those are the official ones.
I know this blog is not the correct place to rant about this
but your post showed up in my reader (via Planet Gnome) and I got courious about the current default wallpaper and artwork. After half an hour or so… I’ve given up. It seems that either I need some sleeping, or the official Gnome artwork is VERY hard to find.
Anyway, so far I think:
- art.gnome.org should have a tag, or category, or whatever means to classify and search for the official artwork by release;
- Gnome should make an effort to ask the distros, at least those shipping Gnome by default, to include some package with the offcial theme, icon set, wallpapers and such.

This is how to get contributors, make people compete and after a couple of competitions more and more people will compete to see their work on the gnome desktop. Gr8 Idea…

gnome also needs a new gdm theme

I second the request for a new GDM theme but that would be obsoleted to at least some extent by merging gdm-2.21 which uses a totally revamped UI.
Is there any chance to get a confirmation email after submitting content or even better a pre-screened submission gallery? I’m not sure if creating more “abstract” wallpapers is not a waste of time.
