As promised, a small guide for linux on the samsung nc10.
Updated software seems to contain enough compatibility for this netbook, in fact everything worked fine except the “Fn+keys”.
You have to follow this step to make “Fn+keys” work:
To enable the Fn+F5 hotkey (disable monitor brightness) do:
- Install xbacklight
- copy this script into /usr/bin and make it executable: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/175266/nc10/xbacklight.sh
- Run these:
gconftool-2 -s --type string /apps/metacity/keybinding_commands/command_1 xbacklight.sh
gconftool-2 -s --type string /apps/metacity/global_keybindings/run_command_1 XF86Launch1
Some notes:
- Check out the upstream kernel bug: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12021
- Feel free to write a better xbacklight.sh script
- The brightness keybinding should work with gnome 2.24. I’m not sure about the “XF86Launch1″ command, which could change (?) on some distributions. “XF86Launch1″ is the command recognized by fedora after patching the kernel.
- Change the id of the keybinding_command if you have already bound other commands.

Unfortunately many people don’t use bugreports, maybe because they came from Windows where bugreports are not present and not encouraged. This post is just about this: please use bugreports.
If you find something that you don’t like, something that you think that can be improved, or if you just have an idea, use the bugzilla!
For example: there are some glitches when using a dark gtk+ theme with the murrine/clearlooks engine and…I’ll attach a screenshot…
Or: I would like to have an option to change the progressbar style on my murrine themes…
Or even more: I have made a mockup for the tabs/notebook of murrine, here it is…

Unity and GNOME-Alternative hits GNOME’s trunk (gnome-themes-extras).
I will do the 2.22.0 release when andreasn will answer me if he needs some more days to complete Foxtrot Icon Theme
Anyway I will wait since Unity is in testing, so I can do some fixes if someone notices some bugs.
P.S.: We chose the name Unity over Suave since it follows the design and it means something more (Suave got problems with translations/meanings between languages)
P.P.S.: I’ve changed a little bit the text of the inactive titlebar so should be more usable. No screenshots for the moment

Mentre continua lo sviluppo su Murrine RGBA (a breve un post di aggiornamenti), ho aggiornato il sito di Murrine offrendo la possibilità di registrarsi ed inserire Temi!!!
Questa volta infatti ho deciso di optare per una scelta diversa dal solito sito di presentazione di un software (e ai classici forums), offrendo la possibilità di contribuire in modo diretto.
A contraddistinguersi dagli altri portali vi è il tentativo di fare un briciolo di selezione, in modo che si possano trovare subito i temi più belli senza doversi perdere nei meandri di Gnomelook…
Che dire, se siete themers e avete fatto qualcosina correte a registrarvi e uploadate i vostri lavori che andranno subito a far parte della raccolta ufficiale presente sul sito!

Ho aggiunto il pacchetto metacity-compositor-svn, con cui potete provare il nuovo branch di metacity, con prestazioni 30% superiori su tutti i temi e supporto ad un compositor basato su Xrender!!! Ora la velocità, grazie al boost del 30%, è paragonabile se non maggiore a quella di Kwin, con l’incredibile vantaggio dell’imbarazzante maggior numero di temi a disposizione e la facilità nel creali!

Per attivare le ombre basta abilitare l’estensione Composite in xorg.conf, lanciare gnome, e dare il seguente comando da terminale (oppure usare gconf-editor):
gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager --type bool true
Importante, Leggere
Con questa versione (in sviluppo, ricordo) non funziona più il gestore dei temi, quindi questi vanno specificati a mano con l’editor di configurazione.
Pertanto potete scegliere fra:
- Non aggiornare finchè questo problema non viene risolto (vi avviserò qui nel blog quando tutto sarà ok).
- Aggiornare e modificare le impostazioni dell’interfaccia tramite gconf-editor
- Se dovete cambiar tema e non volete rinunciare all’interfaccia grafica date un “pacman -S metacity”, lanciate la gui, poi un “pacman -S metacity-compositor-svn”
Piccole Considerazione
Questo branch di metacity non si pone come alternativa a Compiz (come invece fa il compositor di Kde4), bensì come un supporto stabile e funzionante su praticamente tutti i computer all’estensione composite (che permetti di usare le trasparenze come avant-window-navigator, screenlets, etc etc).
Usa Xrender e non OpenGL, quindi le prestazioni talvolta possono essere peggiori (nel caso abbiate una scheda video con un rendering OpenGL abbastanza veloce).
Insomma usate Compiz se avete un pc che ve lo supporta, se vi piace dannarvi l’animo con mille configurazioni e se non vi sembra troppo giocattoloso

Sono lieto di darvi la notizia che da oggi il modulo gnome-themes-extras ha un nuovo capo… Il famigerato “Cimi”
Sì sono il nuovo Maintainer ufficiale… Quindi d’ora in avanti sono liberissimo di rimuovere tutte le schifezzuole e aggiungere temi freschi e belli al parco di temi di GNOME.
Comincia la caccia ai temi GPL che meritano un posto in GNOME 2.20!
Il primo obiettivo è un bel tema scuro, probabilmente basato su YADT (Yet Another Dark Theme).

Update: Aggiunti due temi seguendo qualche consiglio del nostro supereroe clarkkent ed usando questo nuovo wallpaper scaricabile qui.
Come da titolo stavo giochicchiando con i colori scuri presi da Tango, e devo dire che viene fuori una cosa carina
Ecco uno screenshot, prendete pure i colori in alto a destra sulla schermata per la selezione degli stessi.
Stili consigliati con questo schema di colori:
- Gummy
- Inverted
- Clearlooks
